Green Team at the SoRo Fest

SORO NC's Green Team will be out in force at this year's SoRo Festival. They'll be giving away gift bags stuffed with things to help make your day a little more environmentally friendly—including the reusable grocery bags themselves.

There will also be a raffle for compost bins, a rain capture barrel and—yes—worm bins. And if you miss the raffle, we'll be taking orders for City of LA compost and worm bins, as well as for the worms themselves (CHECKS ONLY).

For more information, check out our full SoRo Festival 2010 page.

Help Pick Fruit for the Mayor's Day of Service

Do you regret that fruit on your fruit tree goes to waste? There are many who are hungry! The SORO NC Green Team, together with local school clubs, scout troops and other local organizations will be picking neighborhood fruit and avocado trees for the:

Mayor's Day of Service aka "Big Sunday"
Saturday (and Sunday, if you are Orthodox), May 1st and May 2nd, 2010

We are looking for two things:

  • Fruit trees with fruit ready to be picked
  • Volunteers to help with harvesting

For appointments to have your fruit tree picked, or to volunteer for one of our crews (it's really fun!), call or email Paula Waxman at 310-559-2552 /

The Green Team drops off all fruit collected to our local food bank:
SOVA Food Bank
8846 West Pico Blvd., Los Angeles

In February, we picked over 700 pounds of fruit in 2 days! So contact us today to schedule your tree...or yourself (to volunteer).

SORO NC Official Election Results

The votes have been cast, and the returns are in. Visit the City Clerk site to see the official results.

CERT: Emergency Response Team Training

Monday Evenings from 6:30-9:00 pm
May 3, 2010 through June 14, 2010

Simon Wiesenthal Center
Third Floor
1399 S. Roxbury Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90035

Once again, SORO NC's Emergency Preparedness sub-committee and C-PAB Neighborhood Watch are sponsoring a FREE emergency preparedness training course from the Los Angeles Fire Department.

CERT Training is vital for a large city like Los Angeles. Learn how to be prepared for earthquakes, acts of terror, civil unrest, fire and any natural disaster. In the event of a disaster you need to be prepared to be on your own for 72 hours or more. Los Angeles City First Responders (911) will be overburdened and may not be able to help.

You need to be prepared to help yourself, your family and your neighbors. This course will teach you how.

Expo Line: Phase 2 Environmental Impact Report

The Expo Line—with a soon-to-be-built station at Venice and National—will trigger enormous and important changes in our southern area. As Phase 1 nears completion, the final Environmental Impact Report (FEIR) for Phase 2 has been released. (Download the shorter Executive Summary or the entire FEIR).

On Thursday, February 4 at 10am, the Exposition Construction Authority's Board of Directors will consider certifying the FEIR. If approved, the next phase (extending the line to Santa Monica) will continue with more detailed design and broader community outreach.

It's important that your voice be heard in this process. Whether you support the FEIR recommendations or have concerns, please consider attending the hearing at Kenneth Hahn Hall downtown and/or writing a letter to the Board Chair, our own District 10 Councilmember Herb Wesson:

The Honorable Herb Wesson, Chair
Exposition Construction Authority
707 Wilshire Boulevard, 34th Floor
Los Angeles, CA 90017

(District 5 Councilmember Paul Koretz is on the Board, too, and can be reached at the same address.)

You can also email the Board of Directors directly. Now is the time to speak up.

More details on the hearing, including location address, can be found in the meeting flyer.
