In 2007, the SORO NC Education committee started a mentoring program at Shenandoah Elementary School, which paired an adult mentor with a 4th or 5th grade student who needed help with math, reading, or both. Starting in the fall, each mentor meets once a week with his or her assigned student and spends an hour reading aloud, reviewing homework, doing math problems, playing language games or other activities the mentor feels may help the student.
So far, the program has been very successful, but there is a great need for more mentors. Each year, there is a waiting list of students hoping to be paired with a caring adult, but without a sufficient number of volunteers, many of these students go through the year unable to receive the tutoring they need. If you would like to make a real difference with a child in our community, please sign up for this worthwhile program.
