Additional
Last week, I informed the community that West Los Angeles Detectives had identified the crew
responsible for the bulk of burglaries in the Cheviot Hills area. For about eight consecutive days,
there was no burglary activity in Cheviot Hills. However, I cautioned that despite these arrests,
other criminals might still seek opportunities to commit crimes.
Unfortunately, I must now report that the Cheviot Hills community is experiencing another series
of burglaries, with a similar modus operandi to the previous incidents. We suspect that the
burglary crew responsible for these crimes in Cheviot Hills may also be linked to similar
burglaries throughout Los Angeles.
In recent days, detectives have collected video surveillance related to this new series and are
diligently working on the case. We will implement a strategy similar to our previous efforts to
address this issue.
I ask the community to take the following precautions:
- Ensure all doors and windows are securely locked.
- Verify that your alarm/security system is functioning properly.
- Be vigilant and watchful of your neighbors' homes.
Lastly, In Beverlywood and the South Roberson Area there has been reports of a jewelry swap
scam. Here’s how it typically works:
1. Approach: The scammer, often posing as a friendly or well-intentioned individual,
approaches the victim in a public place.
2. Engagement: The scammer engages the victim in conversation, often complimenting their
jewelry. They might offer a "gift" or a "good luck charm" as part of their ploy.
3. Distraction: Using charm and distraction, the scammer asks to see the victim's jewelry up
close. They might say something like, “This piece looks beautiful! Let me show you how my
piece looks on you.”
4. Swap: The scammer then puts their own piece of jewelry on the victim, often something that
looks flashy but is actually worthless. While doing this, they skillfully and subtly remove the
victim’s genuine jewelry, such as a watch, bracelet, or necklace.
5. Leave: The scammer quickly leaves the scene, sometimes making an excuse or simply
walking away, leaving the victim with the fake jewelry.
The victim only later realizes that their valuable piece of jewelry is missing, and or replaced by
the scammer’s worthless item.
This scam relies heavily on the scammer’s ability to charm and distract the victim while
performing the swap. To avoid falling victim to this type of scam, it’s crucial to be wary of
strangers who show unusual interest in your personal belongings and to be cautious about letting
unknown individuals handle your jewelry.
