Additional Information
The distinction between being vigilant and being a vigilante hinges on the balance between awareness
and action, particularly in the context of crime-related matters.

Vigilant involves being watchful, alert, and aware of potential dangers or threats. It entails adopting a
mindset of paying close attention to one’s surroundings and maintaining caution to prevent harm or
wrongdoing. For instance, a neighborhood watch group that reports suspicious activity to the police
exemplifies vigilantism.

On the other hand, a vigilante refers to individuals who take matters into their own hands, often
resorting to force or illegal means to punish perceived wrongdoers. Vigilantes often believe that official
authorities are either ineffective or too slow to address crime effectively. For example, someone who
actively hunts down and punishes criminals without police involvement is considered a vigilante. This
action is criminal and opens those who employ the vigilante to civil liability
